Hocus, Focus – How To Gain More Focus
I think we all realize the value of being focused. When we are focused, it allows up to accomplish more in less time. It also allows us to get lost in the moment, and really enjoy what we are doing. There is no denying that most successful people accelerate their success through the power of focus. Having said that, most of us have a hard time utilizing this tool. Living in a fast- paced, distraction filled world makes it a real challenge to generate focus, let alone maintain it. Here are 3 keys that will help you take advantage of this great tool:
1. Establish Strong Boundaries
Focus, by definition, is the lack of distractions. One of the main reasons that we find it hard to focus is that we are constantly distracted - most of the time by our own doing. One way to end these distractions is to set up some strong boundaries. For example, build in an hour a day for focused activities. Shut off your phone, turn off your computer, and shut your office door. Instruct your co-workers that you are not to be disturbed - for any reason. Now, take out that one thing you want to focus on, and only do that activity. Once you get in the habit of doing this, you will find that you are more able to focus on what you need to.
2. Do Only What You Are Passionate About
Another reason that we find it hard to focus is that we do things that we don't like to do. Think about a task that you have been putting off for awhile. How many times have you distracted yourself from getting it done? Do you find yourself procrastinating all the time? If you do, you are losing focus because you are avoiding the pain associated with that task. Instead of continuing this behavior, challenge yourself to delegate the task, or just get rid of it. I think you will find when you are passionate about what you are doing, you will have a much easier time focusing.
3. Build More Balance in Your Life
Without balance, there can be no focus. It is physically impossible to focus for long periods of time without substantial rest periods in between. Think of a professional athlete. They spend 10% of their time focusing during the competition, and the other 90% of the time resting in between games. Limit your focus time during the day. Build balance in your life so that you are rested and ready to focus when you need to.
Follow these 3 keys, and you will find that you ability to focus increases. Additionally, as your capacity to focus increases, your success will too!
