You Can Have Anything You Want, But Not Everything You Want
Opportunities. We are surrounded by them everyday. It seems that everywhere we turn, someone has another good opportunity for us. One of the great things about the times we live in is that there is an abundance of opportunity for everyone. The problem with this is that often times, unless we make a conscious decision on which opportunities to pursue, we become overburdened. It's hard sometimes to say no, especially when you don't know which opportunities are the good ones, and which ones don't fit in as well for us. I like to tell my clients that you can have anything you want, but not everything you want. What does this mean? It simply means that if we don't choose what it is that we really want, we may not get anything we want. Here are a couple of tips to help you get clear on which opportunities you should go after, and which ones need to be let go:
1. Review the opportunty in the context of your goals
When presented with an opportunity, it is helpful to review this within the context of your overall goals for the year. Is this something that is going to move you closer to your goal, or further away?
2. What resources will I need to pursue this opportunity?
If you decide to pursue the opportunity, it helps to look at it from a resource perspective. How much time will this really take? What is going to be my return on investment? What other resources are required, such as time, money, and manpower? Will I need to forego something else I am already working on? Make sure you are clear as to what you are actually committing to.
3. Is the opportunity something that fits in with me personally?
Is this something that is going to feed you and give you energy? Does it fit well with who you are as a person - your skills and talents? Make sure you have a good match, so that later on down the road you don't regret saying yes to something you should have said no to.
By carefully weighing your options and deciding which opportunities are good for you, and which ones aren't, you will be able to focus yourself and your business, so that you don't lose site of your goals and objectives. The key thing to remember is that through laser focus, you can have anything you want, but not everything!
