Employee Motivation
Are your employees highly motivated? If not, the problem usually lies with the manager or the overall company practices, not the employees. Here are three questions that will help you identify some reasons why your employees may not be as motivated as they could be:
1. Does your appraisal system effectively recognize the effort of your employees?
If not, your employees will not give their maximum effort, as they know they will not be recognized for it.
2. Is there a strong correlation between a great appraisal, and the resulting rewards?
If you rate your employee a 10, and then follow it up with a 3% raise, your actions tell your employees that maximum effort does not provide maximum rewards. Also, if you downgrade the ratings in order to justify a low pay increase, it has the same effect.
3. Are the rewards in line with the wants of the employee?
Are you rewarding your star employees with a raise or bonus, when they really want a promotion? Keep these three things in mind when working to improve employee motivation. A system that recognizes and rewards effort, and has targeted rewards based on employee needs and wants, will result in a highly motivated work force!
