Forget New Year’s Resolutions – Do This Instead

It’s that time of the year again – New Year’s resolution time! Now that it’s the new year, it’s time to determine what your resolution will be and forge forward, working to make the new year your best ever. If you are honest though, how well has this practice worked for you in the past? If you are like most people, probably not very well. That’s why, as a coach, I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I encourage you to take a completely different approach…
Instead of setting a New Year’s resolution, I encourage you to sit down for a few minutes and review last year. What went well? What did you accomplish that you are excited about? What didn’t go so well? What challenges did you have that you’d like to overcome? What’s one area of your business (or your life for that matter) that if you upgraded it, would make a huge impact on you this year? Taking the time to do this will give you a great foundation for setting some goals that will have a big impact going forward.
Now that you have a solid understanding of what went well and what didn’t go so well last year, I have a question for you. If I could wave a magic wand and make one area of your business (or your life) perfect, what would that be? What exactly would you like to achieve in that area? When do you want to have that by? This should help you set a solid, meaningful goal for yourself.
The big difference maker for you now that you have a solid goal for yourself, is to set your purpose. Why is this a MUST for you to achieve? This is where most resolutions fail. We typically don’t accomplish what we want or wish to do, but rather what we MUST do. Write down all of the reasons why you must accomplish this goal. Next, answer the following two questions with as many answers as you can come up with – what will I gain from accomplishing this goal, and what will it cost me if I don’t? These three questions will help you get laser focused on your purpose for achieving the goal, which by the way is the #1 reason most people don’t achieve their goals. They have no solid reason to!
The final thing that I want for you is for you to break down your goal into action steps. You have to align your actions with your intentions and take massive action on the daily basis if you want to succeed. Skipping this step turns your goal back into a wish, and for the most part, wishes never come true unless you take action!
Do you need some help? Would you like to have someone walk you through this process so that you come up with something really powerful and meaningful to focus on? If you do, I offer a complimentary coaching session where I’ll spend an hour with you over the phone. You’ll walk away with a powerful goal, a compelling purpose, and an action plan that will get you where you want to go. Sound good? Simply click here and sign up!
By taking stock of the previous year and focusing on what you really want – your goal, why you want it – your purpose, and building a plan to get there – aligning your actions with your intentions, you’ll rock it this year! Have a fantastic year!
