Kevin Chmura is the owner of Flexco Fitness, which was founded in 2001 with the purpose of improving individual's physical fitness through home-based personal training. Kevin hired me in April of 2003 to assist him with his goal of opening a fitness training center. Kevin achieved his goal in January of 2004, with the opening of the Flexco Fitness Center in Glen Ellyn, IL. I visited with Kevin right after the opening, and asked him about his experiences starting and running his own business.
What do you hope to accomplish with the opening of the Flexco Fitness Training Center?
Our mission for Flexco Fitness as whole is to provide services to help people get in shape, no matter how much they have to spend. Our Home Personal Training division is a great service and is in high demand but affording the service is out of reach for the majority of the population. We developed this concept to provided the same personal service at 25% of the cost of conventional training.
What was the biggest challenge you faced getting the training center open?
Getting the financing for the company was the biggest challenge we faced. Although we have been in business for two years, the banks were treating us like a start up. Having no credit and equity was another issue.
How is the Flexco Fitness Training Center different than a regular health club?
We sell completely personalized programs at a price that has never been offered before. We have developed a way to give people the same results as regular personal training at a significantly reduced rate. We also have a friendly staff and no pressure sales.
What advice do you have for someone that is thinking about starting a business?
Be detailed oriented. It is impossible to anticipate everything that is going to happen, but you still need to prepare yourself as well as you can. Going over every detail over and over again is crucial. You constantly need to consult people who have more knowledge and experience than you.
How has coaching helped you in the pursuit of your goals?
Coaching challenged me to think of details that never would have crossed my mind. Sometimes when things were going well I would think that there would be nothing to talk about. There is always something you haven't covered. Coaching taught me to never put my guard down. Most people, including myself, start to coast when things go well. When things are going well, you need to find a way to make them even better.
In starting a new business there is a lot of time and energy that is put into it. Most people get burned out. Coaching taught me how to live a balanced life even when you are working 80 hours a week.
Finding money was the biggest struggle we faced. Most of the struggle was my reluctancy to ask for money. During one of our coaching sessions, you had some very blunt words with me, and told me to get out of my own way. The only thing stopping me was myself. Through coaching I got over this fear. That day I received $20,000 cash and $7,100 in free rent from a property management company that told me, for 6 months, that they would give me nothing. I strongly believe that coaching is a very large part in the difference between a successful company and a failing company.
