Success Interview - Peter Schmitz From CL Nutrition

Peter Schmitz is the owner of CL Nutrition in Crystal Lake, IL.  Peter took advantage of my “Double Your Income in 2008” promotion that I ran in January of 2008.  He signed up for a year of coaching with the goal of quitting his job as a consultant at Oracle to start his own business.  Since we’ve been working together, Peter has quit his job at Oracle, started his own business as an Herbalife Distributor, and opened his own nutrition club storefront location in Crystal Lake, IL, called CL Nutrition!
His grand opening was in September, and in his first 3 months in business he has already helped 236 people lose a combined weight of 1,682 pounds through his Weight Loss Challenges.  He has also given away over $5,600 in prizes to the participants as a result of their successful weight loss.  As if this wasn’t enough, Peter has 11 more Weight Loss Challenges with close to 300 participants starting up in January of 2009!
I recently sat down with Peter to talk to him about his experience starting and running a new business, his Weight Loss Challenges, and the success that he has had this year.

What do you hope to accomplish with the opening of CL Nutrition?

Well, Tom, the goal of CL Nutrition is really to help people.  I want to help people to live a healthy lifestyle by educating them on nutrition and exercise so that they can achieve their goals.  We do this through Weight Loss Challenges, as well as selling nutrition products and educating people at our clubs.  CL Nutrition is the first club that I’ve opened, and my goal is to build a first level network of distributors that will run 50 more clubs, which will eventually lead to over 1000 clubs long term.

My short term goal for this location is to run 50-60 Weight Loss Challenges locally in order to help people live a healthy lifestyle.  Ultimately, I’d like to be able to help 20,000 people through my network of clubs and distributors.  It’s a huge goal to tackle, but one that’s really worthwhile.

What was the biggest challenge that you faced in starting your own business?

My biggest challenge was learning how to open and run an Herbalife Nutrition Club without a direct sponsor or mentor.  These nutrition clubs are new to Herbalife, so I’m one of the first people to open one.  There was a bit of a learning curve!  Once the club was opened, finding and developing wellness coaches to assist me with running the Weight Loss Challenges was also a challenge.  As you know, you can’t build and scale a business like this on your own, so finding great people to help is a must.  Also, learning how to provide the personalized service that I want to provide to my clients has been a challenge.  We’ve helped over 200 people lose weight and achieve their fitness goals, and that takes a lot of personalization.

How is CL Nutrition different than other health and nutrition businesses?

CL Nutrition is really 4 businesses.  It’s a smoothie shop where we have 38 flavors of protein shakes, as well as energy bars and herbal teas that boost your natural energy levels.  We are similar to GNC or a vitamin shop in that we have over 200 nutritional supplements in our club.  We are also the world’s largest weight loss company, running Weight Loss Challenges that help people lose weight and stay motivated.  Finally, since we are a network marketing company, we provide a business with unlimited income potential with no franchise fees, royalty payments, or employees.

What advice do you have for someone that is thinking about starting a business?

First of all, you need to have a solid business plan and marketing strategy that you believe in.  If you can build up your customer base or demand for your business before you actually open, this will really help your initial cash flow.  Make sure that you have a good relationship with your bank and enough start up cash so that you don’t have to worry about cash flow issues as you are building your business.  Additionally, it’s really important to find and cultivate mentors and coaches in all the key areas of your business.  Networking like crazy and being open to try new things has also really helped me be successful so far.

How has coaching helped you in the pursuit of your goals?

The coaching has really helped me to keep on track and accountable to my goals and commitments.  The insights and ideas that you’ve given me in our weekly sessions have really helped me speed up my success.  Also, just having someone that I can use as a sounding board for my ideas has helped me to build my confidence and execute my plan much more successfully than if I had done this on my own.
